Great point, and very thoughtfully articulated. I think you're right that it's venture capital and the pressure to return a multiple of what was previously invested that pushes companies like Mapbox to make these decisions. The question is--would it have been possible to go as fast and as far as Mapbox did without the VC investment to fuel it? Would we have had to wait another 5-10 before a Mapbox-GL-JS equivalent arrived on the scene? Kind of impossible to know, but worth the thought experiment.
